Open for Applications: Raft Of New Bursaries Up For Grabs @ Brighton Fringe 2020

Each year, a number of bursaries are offered to new and returning participants, helping them to put on a Brighton Fringe event and launch their career in the arts.

Brighton Fringe, England's largest arts festival, work with external partnering organisations to be able to offer the exclusive funding, with nine organisations currently offering twenty bursaries worth a total of £19,270. 

There are three new bursaries on offer including:  

** IN:tro bursary from urbanflo Creative; offering a free registration and bespoke mentoring session to young artists (18-25) wanting to put on their first Brighton Fringe production.  
** Eventotron Brighton Fringe bursaries offering £500 towards production costs for two companies. Support will include a mentoring session with an industry professional networking and promotion within Eventotron. 
** Michael Graney bursary, celebrating the memory of the Brighton writer and creative who was passionate about the arts and science-fiction. This bursary gives a free registration to an event whose shows contains elements of hope and kindness at their core.   

The Pebble Trust, Brighton Fringe's principal sponsor and patron, will also be supporting participants for the tenth year running, by offering three bursaries to young people wishing to put on an event. 

The event can come under any of Brighton Fringe's eleven categories, including literature & spoken word, theatre, cabaret & variety and comedy. 

Louise Arnell, co-founder of The Pebble Trust, said: 

"It is a rare and unique opportunity for young people to gain a vital first step into the arts whilst receiving invaluable support and encouragement from professional mentors."  

The Pebble Trust also offers two international touring bursaries; £2,500 to one international fringe festival award-winning show to bring them to Brighton, and £2,500 to an outgoing Brighton Fringe award-winner to go to an international fringe festival. 

This year's winners, Queer Street Productions, took their show on to Sydney Fringe last month. 

Other bursaries on offer this year include the Encore Insure bursaries, which offer five free registrations to theatre, circus, dance and physical theatre, and literature and spoken word events. 

The Irene Mensah bursary, applicable to participants who can demonstrate artistic engagement with marginalised and/or vulnerable people. 

The Brighton Lions bursaries, which offer five free registrations to participants aged 60 or over. 

The South East Dance bursary which offers free registration and mentoring sessions to participants for shows with elements of choreography.

Creature Creature can, via the imminent release of their first collection of self-penned tracks, Two Finger Tantrum, be labelled the new flag bearers of rock. The Brighton-based five piece have furrowed a new burrow at the summit of an age old genre. With this debut album they will be looking over their shoulders at the also-rans for many years to come.

Migrate Art, the art organisation fundraising to support displaced and homeless people, has partnered with ten major contemporary artists and illustrators to create limited editions of re-usable, reversible face masks.

Young people across the UK will have the chance to find out what it's like to be a record label boss, a film director or a theatre producer through a new podcast series from Lookout that brings together industry professionals from stage, screen and music to share their invaluable insights and experience on how to get into the creative industries.

The South Downs National Park photo competition is now open, with a first prize of £250 on offer to the amateur or professional photographer who best captures this year's theme of 'My tranquil haven'.

"In rock music, it's really easy to talk about partying and shagging girls and all that kind of stuff," says Skunk Anansie vocalist Skin. "But for us, what we were singing about had to be deeper, it had to mean something. We had to talk about our experiences and what we were going through."

Throughout COVID-19 isolation, everyone has become aware of the supportive and stimulating power of music. Although many people want to learn, they have no access to musical instruments or tuition - especially with schools and shops currently closed.

Barely a year since their debut album Dogrel, Dublin's Fontaines D.C. are set to return with A Hero's Death.

The Rec Rooms is an independent music and comedy venue in Horsham, West Sussex, which was opened by three locals just over eighteen months ago. 

This Saturday, 30th May, Together Co, the Brighton & Hove based charity that exists to end loneliness, is hosting a virtual music festival that will see more than twenty bands perform for free to raise money to help the most vulnerable and isolated.  

Following Brighton Festival's digital programme during lockdown, poet and author Lemn Sissay MBE has confirmed he will return as guest director in 2021.
