Born with Asperger's, the film's dancer Jamal Sterrett Phoenix grew up learning about the world through photography, film and spirituality, shaping an aesthetic and way of being, Jamal blends his art with the Caribbean dance style of Bruk Up and freeform, in order to open a window on what lies beyond our perceived mental limitations and transcend the visceral reality of dance.
Jamal Sterrett Phoenix said:
"I'm just doing what I feel I was made to do, by following my heart's calling in life as much as possible.
"That's how I feel myself and Rick came together, by being in that flow within each other's practice.
"I feel the current stresses of humanities challenging circumstances, however as long as we continue to lead and pursue what makes our hearts sing the most, I have faith that humanity will become much stronger for a better future."
The film will premiere on Monday 25 January at 7pm on the One Dance UK Facebook.
Erin Sanchez, Manager of Health, Wellbeing, and Performance at One Dance UK added:
"Each person's mental health experiences will be different, and we hope that by showcasing different ways to share and engage with these experiences, we will encourage more people express themselves.
"As the sector-support organisation for dance, we're committed to doing our part to keep the conversation going."
People wanting to learn more about 'Flow state' will also be able to talk to the makers of the film and discuss the creative process and the meaning behind the visuals in an exclusive live Q&A on Friday 29 January, 1pm http://bit.ly/ODUKflowstate - Registration is encouraged.
