Nina is a class act. She has a tried and tested stage show honed from years of trial and error that has turned her into a faultless performer.
Her use of her monkey (a puppet!) to get to know that evening's Brighton Dome
audience, is a clever trick
from a genius act.
It's also a way for Nina to identify who, later in the act, is going to be chosen to don one of her famous ventriloquist masks.
Last Saturday's mainly middle-aged audience were brought to the boil by a supporting cast of talent that produced mixed results.
Compère Jess Fostequew, best known as the co-host of the globally-popular Guilty Feminist podcast, tried interacting with the still cold-and-difficult-to-know Brighton audience, and found them somewhat wanting.
Even an attempt to feminist flirt with the strongly liberal minded collective fell somewhat short.
Lou Sanders' renowned honest-to-the-bone style of stand-up was both quirky and refreshingly honest.
Her past misdemeanors and subsequent success in kicking the booze via AA recovery, seem to have fallen from her act and been replaced an almost ditsy persona that appears unprofessional, but is more than likely a part of her act.
Was interesting that the same 17-year-old boy she flirted with (embarrassing his mum) were also the same couple that stepped up on stage later in the night for Nina Conti's portion of proceedings.
Glenn Moore was up next with his apparent James Acaster sped up impression which, though funny to begin with, wore thin with the audience towards the end of his set.
Late edition to the evening, Angelos Epithemiou, was always likely to push Conti close for being best on the bill.
He stepped out onto one of the most iconic stage's in the land, only to look like he'd just come in from sleeping in the venue's doorway.
Angelos dances a fine line between being laughed at and being laughed with.
At one point he announced it was time for the interactive part of the show.
He shuffled into the audience, dismissed a couple of people before settling on Adrian .. who was dismissed and never mentioned again!
Time constraints dictated that the two favourite portions of her act where the two on display on Saturday.
The aforementioned Monkey was used to warm-up and get to know her attendant 'victims', before they stepped forward and donned her famous masks.
It's difficult to grasp how lightning witted Conti is and how often she seemed to know what her subjects were thinking before they did.
Seriously side splitting stuff in a good-natured, though sometimes cringe making, way.
All-in-all a mixed bag dominated by the twin talents of Conti and Epithemiou. Very funny indeed ..
