Local Publisher Set To Star As Mboka Festival Brings African Art Culture & Music To Brighton

A Gambian festival celebrating art, culture and music from Africa and the diaspora will hold a one-day showcase in Brighton.

The festival showcase is organised by African Writers Abroad, who has been running the Mboka Festival of Arts, Culture and Sport in Gambia, West Africa for three years.

Brighton-based publisher Myriad Edition will present authors from its 2019 publication New Daughters of Africa, an international anthology highlighting the voices of over 200 women writers of African decent, which recently visited Brighton, Festival, as part of a UK tour.

Kadija George, Mboka Festival Co-Director, who is also an author in the New Daughters of Africa anthology, says:

"It is really exciting to bring the Mboka Festival to showcase in the UK because as well as promoting Sene-Gambian culture, it's a mash-up of African artists from the diaspora and the continent, most of whom have performed at the festival in The Gambia.

"Everyone who comes, then talks of being part of the Mboka Family and the showcase started as a reunion event of those who took part in Mboka in The Gambia and it has just grown bigger.

"It's great because Mboka is a Wolof word that means 'oneness' or 'one family'."

Highlights of the Mboka Festival include authors Yvvette Edwards, Olumide Popoola and Zena Edwards reading from New Daughters of Africa ;  screening of Gambian films Welcome to the Smiling Coast and Gifts from Babylon; and visiting traditional Gambian Songstress Fafa with Kora player.

KAPU KAPU a new one-woman show by Sierra Leone actress Anni Domingo; a family-friendly storytelling & clowning with visiting storyteller from Kenya ; and African music sets by DJ Fever2Ray from African Night Fever and Debbie Golt from Resonance FM.
