Brighton-Based Multi-National Musical Riot Genn Unleash Genre Busting New EP Liminal

Drawing influence from a wide range of eras and genres, Brighton-based troupe Genn have released new EP Liminal. From the opening bass ostinato of its first track Feel to the hooky refrain of closer Falling Out, through rock'n'roll, psychedelia and funked-up, post-punk vibes, Liminal is a veritable rollercoaster journey.

Recent single Mackerel's Funky Mission is an escapist anthem which sees vocalist Leona Farrugia chanting hauntingly as she inhabits the soul of a fish in a bid to free her mind from the confines of Covid-mandated lockdown, and undesirable situations in general.

Farrugia says of the track:

"I think Mackerel's Funky Mission is an escapism mechanism....  you sort of pretend to be someone else - in this case a fish - to escape from a current situation. It's fun to pretend you're something else and write from that perspective.

"It was also inspired by the lockdown as I wanted to be a fish just to be able to travel, and also by my love for the sea.

"I tried to be as visual as possible with the lyrics and the story."

The band's last single Feel, is a luscious blend of 70s psychedelia and shoegaze, and an appetite-whetting taste of what was to come.

Leona Farrugia said:

"Musically, the song was inspired by The Doors and Lou Reed's 'Walk On The Wild Side' - it's drone-centred and infused with psychedelic elements, giving space for the vocals to shine through.

"It culminates in a shoegazey bridge that showcases our love for experimentation, 70s music and jamming.

"The lyrics personify a relationship with drugs and the dependency that stems from that sense of escapism."

They're serving alternative post-punk madness with a fun twist, fresh out of their DIY framework and are based out of Brighton.

The quartet is completed by Janelle Borg (guitar), Leanne Zammit (bass) and Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums).

Together they've been shaking audiences to the core with their infectious tunes, and with the honest, relatable themes they attack in their tracks.

Last year proved to be a very fruitful year for Genn, with BBC Introducing The South, Tom Robinson (BBC 6Music) and Glastonbury Festival championing the band.

The band were also chosen as one of thirty European bands to represent Malta and the UK at the Music Europe Day 2020 online festival organised by the European Union and the publication Europavox, as well as one of the semi-finalists for the GRAMMY-endorsed, NYC-based e-festival Listen to Womxn.

On top of all that, the band were one of the first fifty artists to be announced for Brighton's The Great Escape Festival in 2021.
