Comedian Sarah Keyworth Dissects Hers Parents Relationship To Reveal The Dynamics Of Same Sex Relationships @ Komedia Brighton

Following a sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run, award-winning comedian Sarah Keyworth brings her new show, Pacific, to Komedia Brighton, next February.

Sarah's show is about strength and masculinity written by a 'tiny woman'.

Sarah likes to think of herself as a big strong bloke, when in fact she is a 5ft, 8st woman with arms like beanpoles.

Despite living a life that forces her to look at relationships differently, she still finds herself subscribing to stereotypical male and female dynamics within her same-sex relationship.

Through examining her parents' relationship, she sees these stereotypes in reverse as her mum is the strongest person she's ever met.

In Pacific, she attempts to unpack why she thinks that she, as the self-proclaimed "husband" in her relationship, should be the stronger one.

Where has she got the idea that crying is weak, especially since she cries at least once a day? Why does she think she's the alpha male when, if her girlfriend left her for too long, she would almost certainly starve?

Sarah told Metro Weekend: "I have this strange, gendered notion that I should be the one who carries her over the threshold when, if anyone is going to, she'll be the one giving me the fireman's lift."

She went on tell the publication: "The initial seed (of the show) was I'm quite similar to my dad, but there's quite a lot of stuff about my relationship with my femininity and physical and emotional strength.

"About how I, as a woman who likes to perceive herself as being slightly masculine, almost resents the feminine parts of herself.

"I have some stuff about how I hate how much I cry, so it's kind of a show about a small woman trying to learn how to be a modern man, and accept that emotions are OK, and that I don't have to be the biggest, strongest woman in the room."

Since first performing stand-up at university, Sarah has fast become one of comedy's brightest talents.

Having already been a Funny Women runner-up, 2018 saw Sarah take her debut hour, Dark Horse, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A thoughtful and comedic meditation on gender, girlhood and the challenges of growing up different, the show was a critical hit, and lead to the formation of Pacific.
