Review: Tenacious D @ The Brighton Centre - 13.05.24

Last night, Brighton's premiere punk-rock collective, Creature Creature, sent along two of its members to check-out Tenacious D's Spicy Meatball tour's visit to The Brighton Centre.

Zeus and Dave bore witness to Jack Black and Kyle Gass as the D spread their rocket sauce over a packed house, and left those attending in no doubt that their popularity was once again in the ascendency.

Boasting four studio albums, a cult classic TV show plus a movie, Tenacious D have recently regained said popularity thanks to a slew of viral cover songs.

Last night's gig was a celebration of the duo's musical journey with their usual humour and stage pageantry to boot.

As the band emerged to deafening screams they launched into Kickapoo, a fictional tale of JB's backstory, which sets the scene for all the band's classic tracks, from their huge early 2000's hit Tribute to newest offering, The Spicy Meatball Song.

After only two songs Jack playfully passes out on stage having stated 'I'm too old for this shit" and places the spotlight on Kyle for a rendition of Thin Lizzy's, Jailbreak

When the backing band kick in for the chorus they prove that, all jokes aside, Tenacious D are a solid unit that can rock out with the best of them.

The audience were putty in their hands throughout the entire set, knowing each song word for word - even the covers of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, and Oasis classic Champagne Supernova

Alongside an impressive onstage Pyro display and cameo from their character The Metal, the highlights of the night had to be the aforementioned Tribute and closing number Fuck Her Gently.

They are definitely a band back on form and the queue for the merch table was the longest I've seen at the Brighton Centre - it seems that once again everyone wants a piece of the D.
