Review: WWE Live @ The Brighton Centre 7.11.19

After attending WWE Live at the Brighton Centre, earlier this week, Dave Cobley felt it was the perfect time to not only focus on how far the company, and the business as a whole, has come, but also to look at how little has changed.

There are a wealth of young performers chomping at the bit to make it to the main event (Ali, Andrade and Chad Gable show huge potential) and a fresh line-up of potential matches since the most recent draft.

So it seemed somewhat odd, when looking at how the card was structured, that you could switch in the wrestlers of yesteryear and note it was laid out in exactly the same way as a house show from the early 90s would have been.

The main event of the company's top star Roman Reigns, against the recently anointed King Corbin, gave me flash backs to matches of the calibre of Hulk Hogan vs King Haku. 

Roman had to fight his way back from a seemingly endless beating at the hands of the former Raw general manager, and he did so in a way that would have made the Hulkster proud; feeding off the energy and support of the fully invested Brighton crowd. 

The match that preceded this was, for me, the evening's highlight. 

This was no surprise given the quality of performers involved and the prize they were fighting over. 

The Intercontinental Championship has a lineage built on high work rate that has often fallen into the hands of the best pure wrestlers in the world. 

The title is currently held by "King of Strong Style" Shinske Nakamura. Rarely will you find a wrestler so brimming with charisma and such natural talent. 

Nakamura's opponent, Ali, is a standout on SmackDown with his flashy move-set and a crisp, smooth style. 

They worked a great match with Ali almost winning multiple times only to be thwarted by interference from Sami Zayn.

The other matches on the night were:

A four on four tag between the teams of Dolph Ziggler, Robert Roode, Bo Dallas and Cesaro and Chad Gable, Apollo Crews and Heavy machinery. 

This felt like a match put together to feature any wrestlers that aren't currently in a feud. 

Gable worked a high majority of the match showing off his incredible technique and Otis on being hugely popular. 

I really felt like this was a waste of Cesaro who is an incredible worker.

The Women's title was defended by Bayley. She recently turned her back on the fans but she remains hugely likeable. 

To me, her opponent Charlotte, is much better suited in the role of villain. 

She has over the top confidence and a lot of her natural mannerisms have made her easy to dislike in the past. Bayley managed to sneak out with the title in a good competitive match.

Andrade defeated Sin Cara in a result that, for me, was never in question. 

Andrade could easily be wrestling for the world title very soon and has proved, especially with his work in NXT, that he has all of the tools.

A singles match between Dana Brooke and Mandy Rose soon turned into a tag match after Sonya Deville attacked Dana and Carmella made the save. 

Dana and Carmella seemed to be the more gifted duo and had a great connection with the crowd.

The show opener was a triple threat Tag Team Championship match between the New Day (without Xavier Woods due to injury) taking on Harper and Rowin and the champions the revival. 

All three teams are fantastic but, after the incredible year that he has had with winning his first world title, Kofi Kingston was the star of this match getting a huge reaction for everything he did.

Overall some of the matches were a little predictable, the night delivered as the wrestlers worked hard to put on a show for Brighton.

The first show announced for Brighton Festival 2020 is Double Murder, a two-part contemporary dance for our times, led by the multi-talented choreographer Hofesh Shechter OBE and performed by ten of his inimitable dancers, accompanied by the sounds of a Shechter-composed score. 

Following the release of his seventh studio album Up On High, Vetiver is heading out to Brighton, next month. In something of a rarity, the upcoming date (part of a UK tour) will see Andy Cabic taking to the stage without the accompaniment of his backing band.
