Shooting Dennis Hopper Shooting: The Twilight Sad Muse On The Song & Video That Kick-Started Their New Album

Shooting Dennis Hopper Shooting is the latest release from The Twilight Sad's new album It Won/t Be Like This All the Time.

Speaking of the video for Shooting Dennis Hopper Shooting, band member and co-director Brendan Jay Smith B (keyboards) offered the following:

"I found an old leather bag at the back of my Grandfather's cupboard with a collection of Super 8 film reels from the late 60s.

"When I thought about connecting this with the glitched layers from DLT's album artwork it felt like we could continue the records themes of distorted and fractured memories, whilst combining old and new formats and blurring the lines between these mediums.

"Filming in an old abandoned swimming pool from the 1920s gave us an opportunity to reflect on past memories, drawing from my Grandfather"s original footage but projecting them in the present in an altered state, by using contemporary methods."

And on the ideas behind the track itself James Alexander Graham (vocals) added:

"This was in the first batch of songs we wrote for the album. I've been mildly obsessed with the way that we treat the people closest to us, be it a friend, a lover, a family member.

"We sometimes seem to push the people closest to us furthest away. We also sometimes treat them the worst because it's the easiest thing to do.

"This song is an example of that. When it comes to an ex-partner and the ways that relationships end, how horrible we can be to someone we once cared so much for or even once loved fascinates me whilst it also makes me very sad."

The Scottish post-punk/indie rock band, released their 2007 debut album, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, was noted for Graham's thick Scottish accent and MacFarlane's dense sonic walls of shoegazing guitar and wheezing accordion.

Andy MacFarlane (guitar) muses on how Shooting Dennis Hopper Shooting helped to kickstart the new album:

"Regarding the feel/performance and sound, this song gave the album a starting point to work from.

"I like the simplicity of it. In my head, it's similar to a Mission of Burma or a Pixies song, which makes it good to play live.

"When I'm naming songs, it's normally just to send instrumentals to James, then we'll try and change it to something more appropriate when the lyrics are finished, but this title stayed the same.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't have anything to do with Dennis Hopper. I needed a title and I think it was an advert for a Dennis Hopper documentary I had open on my computer with Shooting Dennis Hopper Shooting as the headline, so it's more circumstantial why it's called that."
