Brighton Awarded Funding To Help Men Stay Ahead Of The Health Game

Albion in the Community (the charitable arm of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club) is teaming up with the Football Foundation, the Department of Health and the Men"s Health Forum to use the power of football to help fight cancer amongst men in and around Brighton.

Managed nationally by the Football Foundation, Ahead of the Game aims to raise awareness through the power of football of the signs, symptoms and risk factors of bowel, lung and prostate cancer amongst men aged 55 years and above.

The project that Brighton and local PCT staff will deliver on match days and at events within the local community is called Ahead of the Game.

It is part of the nation-wide Ahead of the Game five-club pilot initiative that has been conceived and funded by the Football Foundation and the Department of Health.

The Football Foundation and the Department of Health are jointly providing £186,000 towards Ahead of the Game.

Earlier this year they invited football club community schemes" to bid for funding.

Now, during Men"s Health Week, Brighton and Hove Albion in the Community is one of five club community schemes that have been successful in being awarded a grant.

Albion in the Community project will deliver:

****Branded beer mats and pocket information booklets to be distributed around pubs and social clubs containing information about the signs, symptoms and risk factors of the three cancers and where to seek help.

****A dedicated awareness website with a symptoms testing toolkit. Participants who complete an online questionnaire will be able to download a voucher for two free tickets.

****Dedicated cancer awareness events prior to selected first team matches, at Asda supermarkets, mosques and with refugees and the homeless, where information booklets will be distributed and health professionals will offer practical workshops, health checks and advice.

****Ex-club captain Charlie Oatway will deliver an awareness session with the support of health professionals at Lewes prison, offering health checks and advice.

Ann Keen MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Health Services at the Department of Health, said:

"The Department of Health is very pleased to be working with the Football Foundation to deliver the Ahead of the Game programme.

"The earlier a cancer can be diagnosed the greater the prospect it can be treated successfully. The popular appeal of football provides an excellent opportunity to get this message out to the public.

"I am delighted that, through Ahead of the Game, Brighton and Hove Albion in the Community will be working with men over 55 to raise awareness of lung, bowel and prostate cancers and to explain the benefits of early diagnosis."

Who's that lady (who's that lady)/Beautiful lady (who's that lady)/Lovely lady (who's that lady)/Real fine lady (who's that lady) – well as sure as Tamla Motown ruled the airwaves back in the sixties, the lady in question in the Isley Brother’s classic can only be Martha Reeves.
Having been raised the Alabama the church way, Reeves hit teendom and became a fan of R&B and doo-wop music.

Grotty Camden. Grotty Thursday morning. Graham Coxon sidles out of the cafe, lights up a cigarette and surveys the bit of London that - by default, he insists - has become his 'patch' for the best part of 20 years. "I don't like places," he says. An awkward smile lets you in on the fact that he knows that what he has said sounds a little absurd. "I tried Kent for a year, while my house was being done up, but it wasn't any better. So, there it is."
Back in the café, Graham huddles around his coffee and runs a hand through his tousled hair. Guitarists are supposed to be show-offs by nature. If he were so inc... more >>
