Meditation Brighton: New City Classes Come Under The Spotlight

The Brighton Magazine was delighted to meet up with Andy Lucas, the city's leading hypnotherapist and shamanic practitioner, to ask him about his new meditation courses which start at the end of this month.

The Brighton Magazine (TBM): Aren't there enough meditation classes in Brighton already?

Andy Lucas (AL): There are some excellent classes already in Brighton offering lots of great opportunities to enjoy the benefits of meditation.

However there is still a demand for tuition and instruction in meditation techniques.


TBM: What do you think people want from meditation?

AL: Many people I meet are looking for ways of relaxing, calming down, switching off and/or stilling the mind. Some people find themselves thinking too much or having excessive internal chatter whilst others want to learn ways of tackling feelings of stress and anxiety.

Regular meditation is an excellent way of training the mind to develop healthier ways of thinking and feeling.


TBM: What are you offering that is different?

AL: It's not so much what I'm offering that is different. It's more the way I'm offering it.


TBM: Intriguing. Tell us more.

AL: Okay. Well I'm going to give you a list here, because there is a lot to tell you about.

1. - Courses will consist of a series of eight weekly sessions.

2. - Class sizes are going to be very small, between five and eight students. This will ensure each student gets plenty of attention and individual tuition

3. - Before you sign up to the meditation courses you are invited to one of my free open days and open evenings. At each of these events I will ask you:

* What you want from the classes,
* What you know already
* And at what level will suit you.

4. - After meeting you and discussing your needs I will match you with people of similar requirements, so each group will learn at its own pace and in its own way. And the syllabus for each course will be tailored to each group.

5. - I am currently planning to have at least one group for each of the following levels and themes:

* Meditation for beginners with an emphasis on unwinding, relaxation and stilling the mind.
* Healing meditation, introducing and developing a range of meditative practices from a variety of traditions.
* Meditation for personal growth and development.
* Yoga Nidra.
* The theory and practice of meditation and how to develop a regular practice, including home study.

6. - The approach to meditation adopted throughout the courses will draw influences from a range of traditions east and west and will not require adherence to one particular tradition or belief system.

7. - Most importantly the training approach I use accepts you for who you are. You already have all the resources you need to get the best possible results from meditation. My job is to help you access your own resources and achieve your maximum potential of living consciously and at peace with yourself.


The open days and open evenings all take place in central Brighton at the following times:

Tuesday 28th October - 6.30pm: Tuesday 28th October - 8.00pm: Thursday 30th October - 11.00am: Friday 1st November - 11.00am: Tuesday 4th November - 6.30pm: Tuesday 4th November - 8.00pm: Thursday 6th November - 11.00am.


The open events are free of charge. The price of the courses range from £60 to £80 for eight weeks with 10% discount for concessions.

The First Hippo On The Moon is based on David Walliams' picture book and has been brought to the stage by innovative children's theatre company Les Petits Theatre Company. 

Author, illustrator and children's laureate Chris Riddell will be the first patron of Brighton-based reader development project, Young City Reads, a scheme run by Collected Works CIC and delivered as part of Brighton Festival. 

They are the band responsible for a large part of the soundtrack of the Mod era and enjoyed a rollercoaster ride through the perils of the music world.

Doktor Haze, creator & ringmaster in the outrageous Circus of Horrors has thrown his top hat into the ring and decided to stand as an Alternative as opposed to an independent candidate in the constituency of Brighton Kemptown in the forthcoming General Election.

The British Science Association is providing grants of £500 to community groups/organisations in Brighton that work directly with audiences who are traditionally underrepresented and currently not engaged in science activity.
