Glenn Tilbrook Hits the Fluffers On His Whistle-Stop Komedia Outing
For more than three decades Glenn Tilbrook has been among the most amiable men in music, renowned for writing many of the most likeable songs around.
A consummate storyteller with the ability to put a damn good tune together.
However, something seemed to be amiss at his Komedia gig, last Tuesday.
The first set saw Tilbrook and his band, The Fluffers, seemingly rush through the songs with very little of the main-man's engaging between song banter; where often his charm & wit come to the fore.
Those segments in his shows are usually as entertaining as the pop masterpieces that bookend them.
The second half kicked off in fine style, with John Bentley and Chris Difford joining the band on stage for Black Coffee In Bed.
But it was a case of peaking too soon, as what followed was a selection of songs that no-one seemed to know.
The momentum was lost until the old staple Take Me I'm Yours was dusted off for an airing.
Next up were the band's now trademark medley of covers, where each member takes their own moment in the spotlight.
The Fluffers are as engaging as the man himself, each with their very own distinct personalities.
From the Arthur Daley-esque drummer, who twirls and juggles his sticks, to the keyboard player's insanely enthusiastic work - to the point where he nearly sends his instruments crashing to the floor!
Despite this not quite being up to the standard of his previous Brighton shows, Tilbrook still remains a joy to watch.
With a back catalogue to die for that can ignite the best party in town, it's just a shame he kept so much of it tucked away on this outing.

Strummer's Ideals Remained Intact @ Komedia

JJ Burnel @ Brighton Dome By Andy Sturmey
What was angst may have long been replaced by a unity of celebration, and what were young band inner tensions may now have been cemented over by a decade of band stability and a collective return to purpose .. but in some ways time had stood still when the Stranglers took to Brighton Dome's Concert Hall (09/03) stage and delivered a set that spanned more than four decades.
Boasting three original members - and three equally iconic figures - the Stranglers, back to a four piece since the change of the millennium, are now cooking on a musical gas that had for a lon...

A Bullet Each For Marriage & Society
'Hedda Gabler…Hedda Gabler…Hedda Gabler’ , whispers the voice of the lover to his ex mistress - a sexual roughness in his voice matches the quiver in hers - and you could hear a pin drop in the long pause that fell upon the stage at the end of his words.
Hedda (Rosamund Pike) and Loevborg (Colin Tierney) are watched by her husband, Tessman (Robert Glenister) and Judge Brack (Tim McInnery).
As they stare at the couple on...

Former Fist Of Fun Comic Courts Controversy
Reclaiming Chaplin's moustache for comedy, Richard Herring - the star of The Headmaster's Son and 90s double act Lee & Herring - muses on iconography, whether racists are closer than Liberals to believing that all people are the same and why an innocent square inch of facial hair has taken the blame for Nazism.
Herring recently justified his show in the Guardian (in response to to an article by Guardian critic Brian Logan) – which contained the following:
“In my show I get into a spiral...

Groove Like An Egyptian With The Spatials
Sun Ra may have claimed to have sourced his musical landscape from the surface of Saturn, but Jerry Dammers' Spatial AKA Orchestra's reinterpretation of the great man's material was simply out of this world at Brighton Dome (05/03).
To many Dammers will be perpetually frozen in time circa 1979 to 1981, but in many ways his current incarnation of arranger, bandleader and performer is producing more forward thinking a...

Kodo: One Earth Tour Came To Brighton
…As the show reaches its climax the heaving sweating men, clutching great drum sticks the width of small trees, are beating and beating and beating and beating away at the great huge drum that dwarfs them (it would fill your living room) as they lean back in some kind of wild yoga stance and raise their arms time after time and the air fills with the noise, the great booming resonance – Yet it is not just the sound but the movement and the architecture of it all, both sound and presence has a sculptural quality so hard to pin down, and so finally they stop, the crowd roars and are on their feet, it is all over.
Many years ago a group of people disillusioned with the state of Japanese culture moved out to a remote island in the Sea of Japan. The Island was called Sado, a one-time commerci...
